You Need A Business Plan!

You’re ready to start your business. You have the concept, you’ve legally organized the company, and you have even talked to an accountant.

So, what’s your plan?


A written business plan is a smart move for any would be entrepreneur. Before you get busy opening and running a business, take the time to write out a step by step plan for what you are going to do and how you are going to do it.

Laying out a plan and setting guideposts for evaluation will allow you to come back after a month, a quarter and even a year to make sure you are staying true to your vision and you are achieving the goals you laid out for yourself.

Don’t know where to start? There are a ton of free resources online for how to write a business plan. Any number of websites will provide you thoughts and strategies about how to write a business plan and what should be in it.


But if you really want to get it right, get help from SCORE (

SCORE is the nation’s largest network of volunteer and expert business mentors. It is dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground, grow and achieve their goals. Since 1964, they have provided education and mentorship to more than 11 million entrepreneurs, mostly free. SCORE is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and a resource partner of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

SCORE mentors are experts in entrepreneurship and related fields. They are often retired executives who have had success in business and now are helping give back. They have been there; they know what you are going through and they want to help. You will get paired with a mentor who will meet with you on an ongoing basis to provide continued advice and support as you start and grow your business.


You can access free, confidential business mentoring in person at local chapters across Wisconsin and the US, or remotely via email, phone or video.

If you aren’t comfortable talking directly with someone, SCORE also has an extensive library of webinars and on demand courses you can take live or on demand on your own schedule.

It’s an incredible wealth of information available to you when you need it and how you want it.
