WVCC Staff Picks - Spring 2021 Edition

Nothing is Quite Like the Spring and Summer in Wisconsin...

We have had a handful of requests from our members and volunteers to share a bit more about ourselves. Accordingly, we've created this "Staff Picks" series for your reading enjoyment.

Saul Newton, President & Executive Director

What are you looking forward to most about the return of warmer weather?
Nothing in Wisconsin is quite like the spring and summer in Wisconsin. I'm most excited for the return of festivals and concerts in the park near my house.

In April, the WVCC celebrates restaurant/food/retail month. What is your favorite restaurant in Wisconsin?
My favorite restaurant is Ardent, Justin Carlisle's restaurant in Milwaukee. Justin served in the National Guard and is one of the best chef's in the Midwest. His meals are out of this world.

Your favorite Wisconsin-based retail operation(s)?
Kohl's Department Stores. Not only is Kohl's a Wisconsin based company, but their commitment to their military and veteran employees and the veterans community is substantial.

What would you consider your greatest accomplishment (personally or professional) of Q1?
Receiving my COVID-19 vaccination thanks to the incredible staff at Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee.

What veteran-owned WI business are you excited about right now?
Too many to pick just one. I'm very excited to watch the veteran entrepreneurs in our Command Post business accelerator grow and expand their businesses.

What are you reading?
Warriors and Citizens by Gen. James Mattis

What are you listening to lately?

Best movie/tv watched in Q1?
Hell's Kitchen. Adam got robbed.

Adam Braatz, VP of Communications & Programming

What are you looking forward to most about the return of warmer weather?
Wearing shorts comfortably. I am totally "that guy," who wears shorts 9 months out of the year. I am not ashamed (though my family thinks I should be). Pants? You mean leg prisons.

In April, the WVCC celebrates restaurant/food/retail month. What is your favorite restaurant in Wisconsin?
My family LOVES That's Amore in Greendale.

Your favorite Wisconsin-based retail operation(s)?
I'll have to agree with Saul on this one. Kohl's.

What would you consider your greatest accomplishment (personally or professional) of Q1?
Juggled a lot professionally but still managed to get in some great family time!

What veteran-owned WI business are you excited about right now?
I'd have to say Explorium Brewpub, as I've been craving their fried meatloaf bites appetizer something fierce! Trust me. They're amazing.

What are you reading?
Currently working on The Leadership Challenge by James Kouzes and Barry Posner. I recently finished Hook Point by Brendan Kane and highly recommend it to any marketers, content creators, and/or brand builders.

What are you listening to lately?
The new track by Everything Everything, "SUPERNORMAL" slams. Just a warning, though, the music video is somewhat disturbing.

Best movie/tv watched in Q1?
I enjoyed getting caught up on Better Call Saul. Unpopular opinion: it is better, in many ways, than Breaking Bad.

What are you looking forward to most about the return of warmer weather?
Besides simply looking forward to warmth, the return of warm weather means the return of Formula 1 and IndyCar! I’m a huge race fan.

What are you listening to lately?
Maverick City Worship and Taylor Swift. Blame my youngest daughter for the T.Swift. But I will admit...She’s an impressive artist!

Best movie/tv watched in Q1?
L.A.’s Finest on Netflix. A surprisingly great show!

Fun fact: Gabrielle Union, who stars in the show, was recently a virtual guest for a TEMPO Milwaukee event. I had the honor of making a video for Gabby to share about a social enterprise that I created and how it helps women and children. I call her Gabby because we’re on that level now. Okay no, we’re not on that level but I’d like to think so, lol! I just want to play one-on-one against her husband, Dwayne Wade.
